As we, in the US, become more concerned with teaching our children and young people false self-esteem over real academic work in our school system, we'll have more and more people like you see in that video.  Mass ignorance and a TV addicted populace is great for the US's consumer-based economy, but bad for almost everything else that matters in life.

While the video is a "setup" in some way -- they only show the folks who give wrong answers to the questions and outrageous ones at that -- I'll still bet that it wasn't too difficult to find ignorant people roaming the streets.

And you're right: it's funny ... and sad.

Yes this video is clearly a setup and the way they did that you could place

it anywhere in the world and get the same results. But i was wondering about

the USA yesterday... The USA is so gigantic big as a country that I dont even

know details of all the states, I know some popular things and some specialty's

on geological state or cultural state in the USA, but dont ask me who is the

govenor of a specific state.

We had some long time ago here in The Netherlands a show called "Vakantie

Man" (the holliday man) who traveled towards popular Dutch toerist places in

Europe and he would ask People to point at the map the country and city where

they where... man you would  not believe what came out..hahaha...

But all in all its a big concern worldwide i think to get Young people on the right

track and give thenm a good World-View..and basic skills.. We have currently a

problem here in The Netherlands that young-people are not able to "count"

anymore..or do correct Dutch-spelling, just because the money and focus is

on the wrong topics..we now have the problem...

Last time i was in the super-market buying 4 beers.. the beers where 69 Cents

per bottle... the girl behind the counter had to grab a piece of paper and started

counting.. (i'm waiting..and waiting..) Then she say's "Mmm sorry cant figure

out how much that is in total"..and she gave me the beers for free... Hahahaha..

Norman.

I don't even know the governors of all the states (really one doesn't have to), but one should know the governor of one's state of residence.  Sadly, few do.

Norman, you just reminded me of something.  Decades ago, the US used to be bigger than it is now.  That is, when one went to different states or regoins of the US, one could see more of a cultural variety.  Now, the US is becoming more homogenized.  If someone knocked me out and transported me to another state, when I woke up, I'd be likely to see a lot of familiar things.  Not so, many decades ago.

But are those Dutch embarrassed by their own ignorance?  The reason I ask is that I perceive the same Americans are *not* embarrassed by their own ignorance and that's sad and scary to me.

Now there's an example of how knowing about reckoning can get you free beers!! :-)
