Since about 8:00am ET this morning newlisp.org is down, I hope this can be resolved today. Downloads for the Win32 installer and source are still possible at http://sourceforge.net/projects/newlisp
I wonder if anybody has a good suggestion for a reliable hosting company with good support for dedicated servers? Somebody who is around for the next years to come and takes service really serious? I have been a few years with the current hosting company, but whenever something goes wrong, people are not very helpful.

i was going to ask about a suitable host too. What do other people use for running their newlisp wikis? Are you currently using dreamhost, Lutz? I thought they were supposed to be good...
My son found hostgator http://www.hostgator.com/ fine for simple site on a shared server http://www.vanitstudios.com/index.php running Joomla. Can't comment on support for dedicated.

What I am looking for is what they call here a 'dedicatet server hosting'. Basicallly your are renting/using one of your service provider's servers all for yourself. These things run either FreeBSD (preferred), Linux or Windows and have a basic setup pre-installed including a management panel for configuring accounts, web-service, mail-service, SSH shell root access, sometimes DNS, and for rebooting the machine.
Currently I have a 1.8Mhz Pentium with 256MB RAM and 40G harddrive, which costs me about $50+ per month.

The both big players in germany '1und1' and 'strato' offer their dedicated servers for 69€.
More expensive but better hardware: Dual core's with 1GB and RAID1 2x160Gb
I use a vps on rimuhosting. Their dedicated stuff is much more expensive, but they have something called "quarter dedicated." You get a quarter of a machine to yourself.
I am also using dreamhost, btw. They are nice, but the site I have hosted with them seems slow.
Prices in The Netherlands for Unix/Linux hosting are higher then $50,-
But I could run a mirror newlisp's /download/ ...directory,
depends on the traffic (if its not giga bytes per month people download..:-)
but I could run a script on my shell account (debian) and mirror downloads/..daily
They can be found then at newlisp.nodep.nl/mirror/ or something...
(which is http only!)
just let me know..
PS: that would be ofcourse a newlisp mirroring script doing that job ;-)

btw...if you index your complete newlisp.org at google you have a backup ;-).. Its a bit of a lazy trick but people do it ;-)

I'm just about ready to move to Wholesale Internet. They're a competitor of NetStandard. Their main data center facility is downtown KC, and I'll have physical access. I think you can get off the ground with a colocated (not dedicated) box for about $40 per month with 100GB transfer. I'd be willing to be your hands in KC as I'm already preparing to put a system of my own up there.
If all goes as planned, I'll also have tape backup on-site for my own stuff. Depending on the size of your data, I might be able to help you out with backups, too.
I still have one or two of those old Supermicro nodes laying around, too...

Over the years I have been with several hosting companies. All of them turned out to be a good choice at the beginning. The question is: are they still as reliable and committed one, two or three years after today?
Perhaps I should host in more than one place, so I can switch DNS, quickly if required.
